Day 52
Friday, October 27, 2006
Today was my last day at the Coffee Beanery. I'm learning to avoid being overly sentimental about situations like this (so no more "Oh, this is the last customer I'll ever wait on," etc.), so it ended nicely. The ten months there were a blessing--there were negative aspects, of course, but they are ones I'll keep to myself. Some things that'll stay with me, though:
- Coffee. And tea. Oh, I've learned so much. I went from someone fairly interested in coffee/tea to a passionate advocate for all things coffee (and tea!). Working in an environment where the staff actually cares about what they're selling really helped to nurture my blooming love for hot, addictive beverages.
- I learned how to be patient if there is a line of customers. In past jobs, this always got me flustered. Some situations at the Beanery called for me to handle a mass of scowling people, all making obvious glances (accompanied by sighs) at their watches. And I grew to be able to deal with it quickly and with a genuine smile on my face. Well, most of the time.
- Though not all, some customers really, really are interested when you talk to them about coffee. I was cynical about this at first, but the more folks I openly discussed coffee with, the more interest I saw. This gives me lots of hope.
- In addition to being management at my other job (Borders), I got to see some good management from the Beanery higher-ups. Not everything they did was perfect in my eyes, but at least I learned a lot from them.
